The Aaron's 499

(Sunday morning) We're off to the Talladega Superspeedway this morning for the Aaron's 499 NASCAR race.

GO 24!

(late Sunday evening) We're back after the race ... what a disapointment! #24 was run into the wall on lap 6 and crashed. He came back 30 laps later and finished 37th. Oh well, there's always the next race. We did have a good time and it was an exciting race. Major crash on last lap as it always seems to happen at Talladega.

Tomorrow we get Honey back from the Vet and head for Atlanta.

People and Opportunities, April 24, 2009

After a week stay in Savannah (Tybee Island) and preaching in FPC, Savannah, we are parked on this Friday in a Forsyth, GA RV park, getting ready to head for Talledega and the NASCAR race there Sunday. Then, Monday, we go back to Atlanta for a two week stay before heading WEST.

While travelling the last few weeks I have wondered how God would have me use my retirement days, other than travelling this wonderful country with Helen, seeing 'stuff' this boy from the Mississippi bayous has never imagined, and doing the little fix-up items around Molly II that always needs attention.

I think a lot about our nation's future amid this economic condition, the ridiculous and truly sad political shannigans going on in Washington, the slow deteriation of my PCUSA denomination, the geo-political mess fronting the USA on all fronts and, then, of course, my grandkid's futures.

Besides enjoying life with Helen in retirement, God seems to be placing on my schedule, or in my almost daily path, many and varied persons to whom he wants me to be a friend. Maybe that's my professional calling now -- meeting and relating to strangers, many of whom I likely will not see again, some I will. I've had opportunity to share my faith (in varied simply ways) with others who, it seems, are struggling with their own issues.

We just left Tybee Island where we parked next to 'Dan', a 20 year career soldier recently back from Iraq. He is working part-time at the RV park, waiting for his discharge so he can get back to SC and his wife and family. He, too, is uncertain of his future. But what a nice, kind man, talented immensely in so many ways.

And then there was the fellow two RVs down from us. Eric. Long, straggly hair to his shoulders, a winter knit hat pulled down over his ears, a week long beard. You'd think initially that he was a bum. But I learned differently. He works 12 hour days on a construction site, six days a week. I spoke to him the other day, engaged in some conversation. Later that same day he brought us Vidalia onions complete with their tops, fresh from the field. No reason to do that except for his kind spirit. (By the way, we prepared the onions by covering them in maple syrup and real butter...baked for an hour at 350. Wow, were they some kind of good!)

Across the drive was a couple who arrived with the woman driving the large 5th wheel. She did all the manuevering to get the RV backed in and unhitched and hooked up to necessary fittings. The husband watched and I thought, 'that's not nice'. Then I discovered, in conversation with them, that he was suffering from a brain tumor and undergoing experimental chemo treatment. She said she has had to learn how to do everything because he is so weak.

All these and others I have tried to encourage and promised to pray for them in their various situations. Is this what God has ordained that I should be doing? I think, yes, in part.

Enough...on to Talledaga and 220 mph! Go 24!!!

Savannah, FPC & Riverfront April 19 -20

We enjoyed worshiping with the First Presbyterian Church family of Savannah last Sunday where I preached and then, on Monday, going to the Savannah Riverfront.

First Presbyterian Church, Savannah

The Savannah Riverfront (not Factor's Walk, the old riverfront buildings) was designed by a elder in my congregation when I was pastor of FPC.

Savannah is our favorite city to visit. This Spring it is in full color and the old city, the Victorian section and the islands are something special.

Enchanted ISLE OF HOPE

April 17, 2009

At mid-morning we drove from Tybee Island to Isle of Hope where we lived in Savannah in the mid-70's until 1983 when we moved to Arkansas. Isle of Hope is separated from the mainland by the song Johnny Mercer made famous -- 'Moon River'. It is an enchanting island highlighted by Bluff Drive where breathtaking homes and cottages are located facing the intercoastal waterway and the marina.

Wormsloe Plantation is located on Isle of Hope.

What wonderful years we enjoyed in Savannah, living on Isle of Hope. Wish you could visit the Isle someday. It was named Isle of Hope when so many fled to the island during the Yellow Fever epidemic which inflicted Savannah years and years ago.

Low Country Boil last evening with soldier

We had a great three hours, enjoying low country boil, with our neighbor soldier back from Iraq.

Today we are headed for Isle of Hope where we lived 1976 - 1983. Todd and Anna both went to school in Savannah before we left for Arkansas (ugh!) Photos of beautiful Isle of Hope when we get back later today.

STORM!!!

We just got through a violent storm and we're okay. Tornado hit 10 miles away.

We worshiped at Parkway Presbyterian Church in Cumming, GA (3 miles from us) for Maundy Thursday Communion service and today went back to Parkway for Good Friday prayer service. We're going back a third time Easter Sunday for their early service.

Hope all are experiencing a meaningful Holy Week and are anticipating a joyful Easter.

For us believers, every day is Easter!

Fishing Buddy

Two of our dearest friends we've met while traveling are Floyd and Rubye Box. We spent a week with them in early March at Spring Branch RV Park north of San Antonio. (Great niece Carolyne drove down from Dallas to stay with us for a weekend.) Floyd and I and two other guys spent a day together flyfishing on Panther's Creek near North Fork, Idaho. Here's a photo of the four of us, the Idaho 'Deliverance' Gang. Floyd and I hope to arrange another flyfishing this year. Floyd is on far left in the photo. The two guys on the right are 'yankees' and had never flyfished before. Both caught fish. I think Floyd caught the most, just before he fell into the creek. LOL.
Our plans are to leave Cumming, GA next Monday for Savannah where I preach on the 19th. Then, after several more days in Savannah at Rivers End RV Park on Tybee Island, we pull Texas Molly II to Talledega for the NASCAR race there on the 26th. Then, it's back to Atlanta area on the 27th (staying here at Twin Lakes RV Park) for two weeks before heading west again. We have friends in Idaho we will meet in Palisades, ID in early May for a week or so of fishing, then we go over to Jackson Hole, Wyoming by mid-June to meet three couples friends from Johns Creek (Duluth), GA for a week of golfing, shopping, relaxing. In early July we think we're heading for Missoula, MT to flyfish the river made famous in the movie "A River Runs Through It". By August 1 we'll be back at Ambassador RV Park in Calwell, ID (5 miles from Anna and the girls).

Full-timers, of course, often change plans, so who knows ... ours might anyday!

Free & On the Road Again

Jeff Gordon won BIG Sunday in Texas...and brother David and I were successful in getting Texas Molly II out of the mud! We used plywood mats to free Molly II and get her and the Ram 2500 on concrete. Then Helen and I left Nashville by mid-morning on our way to Atlanta for Helen to visit with her mom. We are now parked in Twin Lakes RV Park in Cumming, GA, where we started our 5000 miles journey in July of '08.

A Big Problem!

Yesterday we arrived in Nashville to spend Holy Week with brother David and wife Beth. Pulled Molly II into their drive and, after checking out the firmness of their back yard, attempted to take the 5th wheel around the lawn and position it to leave it there for the week. Got stuck! Ugh! Really a dumb move on my part, but not the first dumb thing I've done on retirement.

Finally got the truck unhitched and onto the concrete drive. Now we've got to figure out a way to get hitched up again and get Molly II out of the soft ground and on our way to Savannah on the 13th. Here's David helping get the truck out of the mud and Texas Molly II waiting for a pull, a wench or a wrecker!.
