Sunday Morning Musings

This past week included some fun and interesting experiences.

- I played the Mountain Falls golf course on Thursday in a 9:00 a.m. shotgun start. My foursome included three really neat guys: a former NASA executive, a former UPS executive and a guy who reminded me so much of Byron Bradley of Duluth, GA. It is an awesomely beautiful course, very hard even though we played the white tees. I shot a 99 and was glad to get it. Long approach shots and heavily bunketed greens made scoring well difficult. The course is surrounded on three sides by gorgeous mountains. Fairways and greens are perfectly manicured.

- We visited the Pahrump Museum and found it fascinating to learn of Pahrumps history. The town only got electricity in 1963. Some quirks in company decisions kept Pahrump from becoming the meca that Las Vegas is now. One of the guys who showed us around knew every iota of Pahrump's history and he never stopped talking! Water is a valued commodity here and there have been many fights over water rights.

- Re the Haitian catasphrophe, the Red Cross and other high profile agencies are getting most of the PR, but other smaller agencies are working just as hard and efficiently. World Water Relief, led by my friends Lee Burleson and Tom Flaim from my former pastorate (The Church of the Hills, Johns Creek, GA) are providing dozens of water purification units in the devastated areas of Haiti. Other small, lesser known agencies are also doing compassionate work in the areas hardest hit. FOX and two of the networks covered their departure from Atlanta. Hopefully WWR will receive some significant contributions to undergird their great work.

- This area of the country gets only about an inch of rain annually. However, the Weather Channel forecasts rain for four to five days this coming week. We went to a used book store yesterday and stocked up for the coming rainy days. The temperature here has been in the high 50's and low 60's for several weeks. We were told yesterday that in mid-summer the temp can go to 120 degrees. We'll be long gone before then. Leaving Pahrump February 3 for Lake Havasu City, AZ, where we will visit friends for a couple days before going further south, then on to NM, TX (to visit Donna and Manning Davis), LA, MS, AL and GA (in Cumming, GA all of April.)

- Vegetation out here in the desert is wildly varied. Here is a cactus we photoed last week on our visit to Shoshone, CA. God has a wonderful imagination, huh? It is not unusual to see every third or fourth block in Pahrump an undeveloped acre or two of desert.

Time to take Honey for a walk and then get dressed for church.
